Gauhati University Rocked by Marksheet Scam; Officials Arrested
Guwahati, June 28: Gauhati University is embroiled in a massive marksheet scam, with revelations of officials inflating students’ marks in exchange for bribes. The scandal was uncovered during an investigation into a forgery case involving a student from Ganeshlal Chaudhary College in Barpeta.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his visit to Barpeta on Thursday, confirmed that university officials responsible for managing the computerized marksheet system were taking bribes to increase students’ marks. The chief minister disclosed that the main accused has been arrested and six related cases have surfaced so far.
Dr. Sarma revealed that the Assam Police and the CID are jointly investigating the scam, which has exposed a network of corruption within the university’s grading system. The scandal came to light when Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student, was caught forging marks. Reports indicated that Barpeta police attempted to cover up the incident instead of arresting Haque, leading to media intervention and the chief minister’s involvement.
Further investigations by Barpeta police have revealed multiple instances of marksheet scams within the district. The chief minister expressed concerns that such fraudulent activities might be occurring in other universities as well and has ordered a continued inquiry into the matter.
Additionally, Dr. Sarma mentioned that the ongoing investigation has unearthed similar scams in areas such as Kalgachia in Barpeta. He also confirmed that the investigating team would be questioning the Registrar of Gauhati University as part of their probe.
As the investigation continues, Dr. Sarma’s remarks underscore the extent of the corruption and the steps being taken to ensure accountability and transparency within the state’s educational institutions.
