Gauhati University Urged to Spearhead Global Academic Alliances by Assam Governor

Guwahati: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, addressing the 32nd convocation of Gauhati University, called upon the institution to prioritize and actively pursue academic collaborations with both national and international entities. He asserted that a collective effort from all stakeholders is vital in positioning India as a global leader in education.

Acharya emphasized, “Together, we must strive to reclaim India’s place as the ‘vishwaguru’ — a world leader in knowledge and wisdom. Gauhati University should lead in our steadfast efforts towards achieving it,” underscoring the university’s potential to drive this national ambition. He also encouraged students to play a proactive role in transforming India into a global education powerhouse, and specifically asked Gauhati University to build strong connections with institutions such as IITs and NITs.

Highlighting the transformative potential of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Governor Acharya noted Gauhati University’s advantageous position to catalyse its objectives. He praised the university for being the first in the Northeast to implement NEP 2020 and acknowledged its successful integration of digital platforms like e-Samarth.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his address, encouraged the graduating students to leverage the emerging opportunities in “new Assam,” spanning sectors from semiconductors and green energy to IT and eco-tourism. He pledged, “I assure the new graduates that the government will create ample opportunities for them to pursue their dreams in Assam,” reinforcing the state’s commitment to nurturing its youth. He further stated, “Today’s Assam is a land of hope, a place where dreams transform into achievements. Assam is no longer a dependent state, but stands proudly as a contributing state of the nation.” The Chief Minister also announced a phased grant of Rs 250 crore to support the university’s development.

During the convocation, honorary degrees were conferred upon several distinguished individuals. Oncologist Amal Chandra Kataki received the Honorary Doctor of Science degree, while Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and renowned oncologist Tapan Kumar Saikia were awarded Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degrees. In total, 3,744 degrees were granted to the graduating students.
