Gaurav Gogoi Accuses Assam Government of Misusing Police for Political Vendetta
Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has accused the Assam government of misusing law enforcement agencies for political purposes, following the arrest of Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh on March 15. Singh was taken into custody earlier in the day, an act that Gogoi condemned as politically motivated and an abuse of police power.
Visiting Singh’s residence after the arrest, Gogoi alleged that he witnessed the Congress leader being “brutally dragged away” by Assam Police without any opportunity for communication. He questioned the timing of the arrest, which coincided with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Assam for the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon. Gogoi challenged whether Shah was aware of the alleged police misuse under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s administration.
The Congress leader also pointed to an incident in Rupahi where BJP-affiliated individuals allegedly assaulted two Assam constables in broad daylight, yet no arrests were made. He accused CM Sarma of pressuring the state police into politically motivated actions that violate legal procedures and High Court directives. According to Gogoi, such interference damages the integrity of law enforcement officers and erodes public trust.
“Home Minister Amit Shah is in Assam inaugurating a police academy. I want to ask him if he is aware of the misuse of police under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Is Home Minister Amit Shah aware that BJP thugs brutally beat up two Assam constables in broad daylight a few days ago, and yet they have not been arrested?” Gogoi questioned.
He further asserted, “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is forcing the state police to engage in illegal activities that conflict with legal standards and the High Court. The track records of police officers are being damaged by the political motivations of Himanta Biswa Sarma.”
The allegations have intensified the political tension in Assam, with Congress leaders accusing the BJP-led state government of stifling opposition voices through selective law enforcement.
