Gaurav Gogoi Blames Assam’s CM for Significant Dip in HSLC Pass Rate

Guwahati, Assam – The recently declared High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) 2025 results have triggered a wave of concern across Assam, primarily due to a substantial drop in the overall pass percentage. Official figures reveal that only 63.98% of students successfully cleared the examination, marking a significant decline from the 75.7% recorded in the previous year, 2024. The results also highlighted a continuing disparity in performance between genders, with girls achieving a pass rate of 61.09% compared to boys’ 67.59%.

Adding to the apprehension, the data unveiled a particularly low success rate among students belonging to the Tea Tribe community, with a mere 51.89% managing to pass the crucial secondary school examination. This figure has drawn specific attention and ignited discussions regarding educational equity and access within the state.

Reacting sharply to the announced results, Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi voiced serious concerns, labeling the outcome as an indication of the state government’s failure to deliver quality education to the young population of Assam. Gogoi specifically criticized the government’s policy of school closures and questioned the effectiveness of model schools established in tea garden areas, asserting that they have not yielded the anticipated positive results.

MP Gogoi further urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to allow the Education Minister to function independently, without any interference. He emphasized the urgent need for targeted and effective measures to enhance access, equity, and the overall quality of secondary education throughout the state, particularly in light of the concerning statistics.

Echoing the concerns raised, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu also acknowledged the worrying trend of lower pass percentages among specific communities. Minister Pegu specifically pointed out that students from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, with a pass rate of 58.56%, and those from Tea Garden (TG) communities, with an even lower rate of 51.89%, performed below the state average.

Minister Pegu took to social media to express his concern, stating that the disparity in pass percentages among Scheduled Castes and Tea Garden communities was a significant issue. He announced that the Education Department would prioritize focused interventions in these two social sectors during the 2025-26 academic year. The aim of these interventions will be to address the existing learning gaps and foster inclusive educational growth across all sections of society in Assam. Official data further elaborated that out of the 38,448 SC students who appeared for the HSLC examination, 22,556 were successful. For the Tea Garden communities, only 1,191 out of the 2,294 students who appeared managed to pass the examination, underscoring the urgent need for targeted educational support.
