Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Assam CM’s Wealth Amid Stagnant Development
Assam: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 9, accusing the state government of stalling development while the Chief Minister’s personal wealth continues to soar.
Speaking at a press conference in Jorhat, Gogoi pointed out the stark contrast between the state’s development indicators and Sarma’s growing wealth, highlighting that Assam ranks 31st in the Human Development Index (HDI), while the CM is ranked 9th among India’s wealthiest chief ministers.
Gogoi predicted that while the state’s development would remain stagnant, Sarma would likely rise to the top five wealthiest CMs in India within a year, suggesting a growing disparity between the state’s progress and the Chief Minister’s financial gains.
The Congress MP also turned his focus to broader economic issues, particularly criticizing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, which he described as “draconian” and burdensome for poor and middle-class citizens. Gogoi stressed that rising prices and unemployment were directly linked to what he referred to as the “mismanagement” of the BJP-led NDA government.
In response to these economic challenges, Gogoi mentioned that the Congress party has proposed a simplified “GST 2.0” system in their Nyay Patra 2024, aiming to address the issues plaguing the current implementation.
