Gaurav Gogoi Dares Assam Govt to Form SITs on Himself and CM Sarma, Alleges Political Vendetta
Guwahati: Congress MP from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi, has thrown down the gauntlet to the state government, demanding the formation of two Special Investigation Teams (SITs) by September 10 — one to investigate allegations against him, and the other to probe the past activities and assets of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, tracing back to his college days.
In a strongly worded post on his official X handle, Gogoi accused the Chief Minister of habitual dishonesty, stating, “When someone lies once, they are compelled to lie a thousand more times to cover up the original lie. झूट बोले कौवा काटे.” He revived a 2009 controversy, claiming Sarma had pledged to resign if Congress leader Madhab Rajbongshi lost the election — a promise he says was never fulfilled.
Gogoi further alleged that in the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, another minister had made a similar resignation vow in Jorhat, but has not honored it following the BJP candidate’s defeat. “The people of Assam want answers. They don’t just want resignations,” he remarked while addressing reporters.
The Congress leader also defended himself against accusations related to Pakistan, questioning whether any Indian citizen could visit the country without clearance from the Government of India. To reinforce his stance, he cited a 2021 book titled India Today – India Tomorrow, which features his article on terrorism in Pakistan. At the same time, he demanded transparency over the Chief Minister’s own visits abroad, particularly to Bangladesh.
Gogoi accused the Assam government of launching a politically motivated campaign aimed at defaming his late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. “Through the SIT, their actual intention is to insult the memory of Tarun Gogoi. They are even targeting his grandchildren now,” he alleged.
He also pressed for SIT probes into sensitive cases such as the mysterious death of journalist Junmoni Rabha and the alleged coal syndicate operating in the state. Concluding his statement, Gogoi declared, “The people of Assam deserve to know the truth. Let the milk and water be separated.”
