Gaurav Gogoi Demands Accountability After Roof Collapse at Delhi Airport Terminal-1
Guwahati, June 28: Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Indian National Congress in the Lok Sabha and a three-term MP from Assam, has called for stringent accountability measures following the roof collapse at Delhi Airport’s Terminal-1. Gogoi’s concerns about the safety of airport infrastructure across the country were voiced in a post on X.
“There must be serious accountability fixed in the roof collapse at the T1 airport. A similar incident took place at the Guwahati Adani airport a few months ago. There has been no hurricane or tornado yet airport roofs seem to be collapsing. What has the Ministry of Civil Aviation been doing for the past few years?” Gogoi stated in his post.
The incident at Delhi Airport occurred early on June 28 amid heavy rain, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to five others after a portion of the roof collapsed onto parked cars, including taxis. This tragic event mirrors a similar incident earlier this year at Assam’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
On March 31, a sudden downpour and storm led to the collapse of a section of the roof in the forecourt area of Guwahati Airport. The storm caused significant damage, with rainwater flooding the terminal, although no injuries were reported. Videos of the ceiling collapse and subsequent flooding at Guwahati Airport circulated widely on social media, raising concerns about the structural integrity of airport facilities.
Gogoi’s comments have intensified public scrutiny on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which has yet to respond to the concerns raised. The repeated incidents of roof collapses at major airports underscore the need for improved safety standards and infrastructure inspections.
As the investigation into the Delhi Airport incident continues, there is a growing demand for the Ministry to address these safety issues and ensure such incidents do not recur, thereby protecting the lives and well-being of passengers and airport staff.
