Gaurav Gogoi Slams Assam Government’s SIT Probe, Calls It Politically Motivated
Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has hit back at the Assam government’s decision to launch a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, calling it a politically driven move aimed at targeting him and his family.
The Assam government announced the SIT on Monday, tasking it with investigating Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh over his alleged comments on India’s internal affairs on social media.
Taking to social media platform X, Gogoi issued a strong response, accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of acting out of fear. “The BJP government in Assam can conduct their enquiry. Every Assamese person knows the real reason behind recent developments. Himanta Biswa Sarma is afraid that he will lose his chair and will have to face justice from the people of Assam after the 2026 assembly elections,” he wrote.
The SIT probe follows CM Sarma’s allegations that Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth, had professional links with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh while working on climate-related initiatives in Pakistan. The case has further escalated tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in the state, setting the stage for a heated political battle as Assam heads towards the 2026 elections.
