Gaurav Gogoi Takes Charge as APCC President, Vows to Uphold Party Ideals and Strengthen Unity in Assam
GUWAHATI, May 27 — Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi formally assumed office as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday, marking a significant transition in the party’s state leadership. Before stepping into his new role, Gogoi sought blessings at the Kamakhya Temple, underscoring the spiritual significance of the occasion.
The ceremonial handover at Rajiv Bhawan, the party’s state headquarters, was marked by a rousing reception as hundreds of Congress workers and senior leaders turned out in support. Gogoi succeeds Bhupen Kumar Borah, who helmed the party through several pivotal moments, including the realignment of alliances and grassroots restructuring.
In his inaugural address as APCC President, Gogoi expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and lauded Borah’s leadership, saying, “I am deeply humbled and honoured to take on the responsibility of leading the Congress in Assam. On behalf of all our party workers, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Shri Bhupen Borah for his dedicated and effective leadership during his tenure.”
Reflecting on key moments of Borah’s presidency, Gogoi highlighted the decision to sever ties with the AIUDF, describing it as a carefully considered move made in the party’s broader interest. He noted that the party, under Borah, had launched several initiatives aimed at reinforcing its organisational strength and protecting the rights of the people of Assam.
Gogoi assured that the Congress in Assam will continue to champion its foundational values of justice, equality, and secularism. “While there may be a new occupant in the President’s chair today, the core principles of the Congress Party remain unchanged — we stand for equal rights, equal laws, and justice for all,” he said. Emphasising unity and continuity, Gogoi pledged to lead with the guidance of senior leaders and the collective support of party workers to build a stronger and more inclusive political future for Assam.
