Gaurav Gogoi’s Appointment Injects New Vigour into Assam Congress
Guwahati: The appointment of youth leader Gaurav Gogoi as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has brought new energy to the Congress party in Assam. Increasing numbers of young leaders and grassroots workers are rallying behind him, marking a resurgence in the party’s fortunes. This was evident during a major joining programme held at Ranendra Bhawan in Kokrajhar town.
Addressing the media at the event, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary and Assam co-incharge Prithviraj Sathe said, “Under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership, the Congress party is experiencing a revival, especially among the youth. This momentum will help us regain ground in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections and the Assembly elections next year.”
More than fifty members from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) formally joined the Congress during the programme. They were welcomed into the party by Sathe and other senior leaders.
Sathe also responded to allegations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who claimed that the Congress government had compromised on women’s recruitment during its tenure. Terming the remarks “unlawful and derogatory,” Sathe said they were “baseless and politically motivated.”
With BTC elections expected in September, political activity has intensified across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). All major players, including alliance partners UPPL and BJP, are stepping up their campaigns in anticipation of a high-stakes contest.
