Ghaziabad: Four-Foot-Deep Tunnel Unearthed at Hindon Airbase, Investigation Launched
National Desk, 12th December: A concerning development unfolded near Ghaziabad’s Hindon Air Base—an alarming discovery of a four-foot-deep tunnel perilously close to the airbase’s boundary wall. This revelation has raised security concerns, prompting an immediate investigation by multiple agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and Military Intelligence.
The residents of Irshad Colony were the first to notice the suspicious pit and promptly alerted the authorities. Subsequently, the police filed an FIR against unidentified individuals at the Tila Mod police station following a complaint from the Indian Air Force.
Despite the potential threat, officials from the Indian Air Force have reassured the public that the integrity of the airbase’s boundary wall remains uncompromised, showing no signs of damage or breach.
Hindon Air Base, operating under the Western Air Command, holds critical importance for the Indian Air Force and serves as the second commercial airport for the National Capital Region, alleviating the burden on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Since February 2019, it has been facilitating domestic flights, particularly under the Government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).
As the largest airbase in Asia, spanning 55 square kilometers, Hindon Air Base plays a crucial role in both military and civilian operations. The recent incident has prompted heightened alert levels at the base, with local police examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to gather more information.
Shubham Patel, the DCP Trans of Hindon, confirmed the intact state of the airbase wall. Authorities are treating the situation with utmost seriousness, vowing strict action against those responsible for attempting to compromise the security of such a strategically significant site.
