Girl Stripped and Humiliated by Family Over Alleged Love Affair in Assam
Guwahati, 13th June: In a shocking incident that has gone viral on social media, a young girl from Gerukabari in Assam’s Bongaigaon district was stripped and had her hair cut off by her family over an alleged love affair. The incident occurred last Monday, June 10, and the video shows both women and men engaging in moral policing against the girl.
The girl’s family accused her of having a romantic relationship with a man, which led them to subject her to this act of torture. The video has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about the prevalence of moral policing and gender-based violence in the region.
This disturbing event comes on the heels of another scandal involving moral policing. On May 12, in Tilak village near Basugaon town in the Chirang district, Sanjit Debnath, the chairman of the Village Council Development Committee (VCDC), was embroiled in controversy over allegations of an illicit affair.
Debnath, a father of two, was reportedly found under suspicious circumstances at the VCDC office late at night. Rumors had been circulating about his involvement in an extramarital affair with a married woman from Vijay village, known by the surname Burman.
Tensions escalated when locals allegedly spotted the two together at the VCDC office during the late hours, prompting community members to intervene. They intercepted the duo and alerted the local police, further fueling the controversy.
Both incidents highlight the ongoing issues of moral policing and societal pressure in Assam, raising questions about personal freedoms and the enforcement of social norms.
