Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day Observed in Arunachal Pradesh
Itanagar: District health teams across Arunachal Pradesh observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day to raise awareness about the prevention of iodine deficiency. This initiative was part of the National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP), which aims to educate communities about the essential role of iodine in nutrition and its significance for health, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children.
- *Importance of Iodine: The state programme officer of NIDDCP, D. Taipodia, stressed that iodine deficiency can lead to cognitive and developmental delays in children. He stated, “Iodine is a vital micronutrient that supports thyroid function and brain development, especially in children and pregnant women.”
- Public Awareness Goals: The main objective is to ensure that every household recognizes the importance of using iodized salt and consuming iodine-rich foods.
- Government Support: Health Minister Biyuram Waghe has committed to enhancing nutritional interventions and improving access to iodized salt, especially in remote areas of the state.
- Community Engagement: Health workers, doctors, community leaders, and volunteers collaborated in each district to organize various activities, including:
- Free health camps
- Public awareness programs
- Educational sessions highlighting the risks associated with iodine deficiency.
This observance serves as a crucial step towards combating iodine deficiency and promoting better health outcomes for the population, especially the most vulnerable members of the community.
