GMC Election Result: BJP wins 13 seats, leading in other 26
Guwahati: The BJP-led alliance is on track to win a large number of seats in 57 wards of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), having won 13 and leading in another 26.
The votes are being counted at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati.
The AAP and Congress have yet to take a position. After a nine-year hiatus, elections to the civic body were held on Friday. The GMC is divided into 60 wards. Three BJP candidates were elected unopposed in all 57 wards where elections were held. In the election, however, 52.80% of eligible voters cast ballots.
The incumbent BJP is fighting the most wards (50), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is contesting 39, and the Assam Jatiya Parishad is contesting 25.
It may be mentioned that as part of its seat-sharing agreement with the BJP, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has fielded candidates in seven wards.
It is to be noted that if elected, the BJP has promised to rebuild the city’s infrastructure. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the BJP’s ‘Sankalpa Patra,’ in which the party pledged to provide piped water to all families 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The BJP has also vowed to eliminate waterlogging in the city by deploying contemporary technology to de-silt drains and river systems.
