Google’s Gemini AI Gaffe: Sundar Pichai should be fired or resign, says investor Samir Arora

National Desk, 28th February: Speculation abounds regarding the future of Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, following criticism from Samir Arora, founder of Helios Capital, over the handling of Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini. Arora suggested on social media platform X that Pichai might face removal or resignation in the aftermath of the Gemini controversy.

Arora’s criticism stems from perceived missteps in the global launch of Gemini, formerly known as Bard, which saw Google facing challenges despite its leadership in AI. The launch, intended to enable users to interact with Gemini Pro 1.0 across multiple languages and territories, encountered issues within a week of its rollout.

Among the controversies, Google publicly expressed regret for the flawed launch of a new AI image-generator associated with Gemini AI, acknowledging instances where the tool ‘overcompensated’ for a lack of diversity, resulting in inappropriate depictions. This prompted Google to temporarily suspend the chatbot’s image generation feature.

Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president at Google, admitted the misstep in a blog post, apologizing for the incorrect and offensive images generated by Gemini AI. While defending the chatbot’s intent to cater to diverse requests, Raghavan acknowledged that certain prompts led to ‘overcompensation,’ causing controversial depictions.

The controversy escalated when reports suggested that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) might issue a notice to Google regarding Gemini’s alleged ‘bias’ in response to a query about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The incident underscored concerns about the chatbot’s impartiality in its responses.

As discussions surrounding Pichai’s leadership intensify in the wake of the Gemini controversy, Google faces scrutiny over its handling of AI technologies and the implications for diversity, representation, and bias in AI-generated content.
