Gorkhas in Assam will not be summoned by FT

Guwahati: The Assam Government following a cabinet meeting has announced that people belonging to the Gorkha community living in Assam will not be summoned by foreigners’ tribunals under the Citizenship Act 1955.

The cabinet also decided to remove all the pending cases in Foreigners Tribunals in the state against the people belonging to the Gorkha community. Making the Gorkhas free from being prosecuted under the Citizenship Act means that now any person from the Gorkha community can live in Assam without any documentation of them being citizens of India.

The decision has been taken two weeks after the Gorkha community was being added to the list of protected communities in the Sadiya Tribal Belts by Assam Government.
