Government Extends Ban on SIMI, Declares It Unlawful Under UAPA
National Desk, 29th January: The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for an additional five years, classifying it as an ‘unlawful association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to zero tolerance against terrorism, the move underscores SIMI’s involvement in activities detrimental to peace, communal harmony, and the security and integrity of India.
The ban, initially imposed in 2014 and extended in 2019, reinforces the government’s stance against the organization, which seeks to convert India into an Islamic nation and has been linked to various terror attacks across the country. SIMI operates in multiple Indian states, posing a threat to national security.
