Government Gears Up for Contentious Winter Parliament Session Starting December 4
National Desk, 2nd December: In preparation for the Winter session of Parliament, the Union government orchestrated an all-party meeting on Saturday, addressing an array of issues pertinent to the upcoming session.
As announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, the Winter session is set to commence on December 4 and extend until December 22. The meeting, held in the hallowed halls of Parliament’s Library building, saw the attendance of key figures, including Pralhad Joshi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, and other leaders representing diverse political parties.
Anticipation is rife for a turbulent Winter session, given the impending presentation of the Ethics panel’s report on the “cash-for-query” allegations involving TMC MP Mahua Moitra in the Lok Sabha. The House will need to adopt the report to set the stage for the recommended expulsion by the panel.
The legislative agenda for this session includes the discussion of three pivotal bills aimed at replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Evidence Act. Additionally, a crucial bill concerning the appointment of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners awaits consideration.
Despite its introduction during the Monsoon session, the government refrained from pushing for the passage of the bill in the special parliamentary session, given opposition and concerns from former chief election commissioners. The bill seeks to align the status of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners with that of the cabinet secretary.
