Government Intensifies Efforts to Resolve Manipur Crisis

Northeast Desk, 17th September: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Indian government is stepping up its efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Manipur, highlighting a roadmap to address the complex issue. Speaking at a press conference marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 100th day in office for his third term, Shah emphasized the racial nature of the conflict and the importance of dialogue between the Kuki and Meitei groups.

The government has been actively engaging with both communities, and recent progress has been made. Shah noted that aside from a three-day period of violence, no major incidents have been reported in the last three months. This development indicates a positive shift towards peace and stability in the region.

Shah identified the India-Myanmar border as a critical factor in the unrest, prompting the government to initiate a fencing project along the frontier. Approximately 30 kilometers of the border have already been fenced, with funding approved to complete the entire 1,500-kilometer border. This infrastructure aims to curb infiltration and violence.

To further address the crisis, the government has implemented additional measures. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units will be strategically deployed to maintain law and order. Furthermore, the agreement allowing free movement between India and Myanmar has been nullified, and entry into India will now require a visa.

In a move to address immediate concerns, the government plans to expand access to essential commodities through Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandars. Sixteen new facilities will be added to the existing 21, with half of the new centers located in hill areas. This expansion aims to ensure that communities in need receive necessary resources.

Shah’s announcements aim to address the immediate concerns of the affected communities and pave the way for long-term resolution. With the government’s renewed focus on resolving the Manipur crisis, hopes are high for a peaceful and stable future in the region.
