Government of Meghalaya Drafts Rules for Maintaining Water Bodies

Guwahati: Government of Meghalaya is creating model guidelines for preserving the sacredness of water bodies as well as rules for providing permits or licences to construct close to them.

Meghalaya High Court was informed that it would hear a PIL regarding the matter on April 12.

The State further informed the Court that members of the expert panel for the preservation of water bodies had been constituted as aquatic specialists.

“Accordingly, at the request of the State, let the matter appear six weeks hence,” the Court said in its order.

“Therefore, at the State’s request, let the matter appear six weeks hence,” the Court said in its order.

It further stated that the State gave the Court its assurance that until the dispute is resolved and the rules governing the maintenance of water bodies and authorization to build close to them are finalised, no construction will be permitted nor will construction work be continued or started near any of the water bodies particularly the Umiam Lake.

The next hearing is set for May 24.
