Government Unveils Revolutionary Toll Pass Initiative for Private Car Owners
Guwahati: The Government of India has introduced a groundbreaking toll pass initiative to streamline toll collection and reduce traffic congestion on national highways and expressways.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed two new toll pass options for private car owners: an annual pass priced at ₹3,000 and a lifetime pass valid for 15 years, available for ₹30,000. Both passes are integrated with the FASTag system, offering unlimited access to national highways and expressways across the country.
Key Features of the Toll Pass System:
• Annual Pass: Priced at ₹3,000, it provides unlimited access to toll plazas, significantly reducing the need for frequent FASTag recharges and monthly toll payments. Currently, private vehicles pay ₹340 per month for a single toll plaza, totaling ₹4,080 annually, which limits access to only one toll booth. The new pass offers a more cost-effective alternative.
• Lifetime Pass: The ₹30,000 lifetime pass provides uninterrupted access to toll roads for 15 years, eliminating the need for renewals and periodic recharges.
This initiative addresses inefficiencies in toll collection, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari noting that private vehicles make up 53% of toll transactions but contribute only 21% of toll revenue, while commercial vehicles contribute the bulk of earnings.
Expected Benefits:
• Cost Savings & Convenience: Private car owners will benefit from lower costs and smoother travel with unlimited access to toll roads.
• Traffic Decongestion: With nearly 60% of peak-hour toll traffic (6 AM to 10 PM) being from private vehicles, the initiative is expected to ease congestion and improve travel efficiency.
Despite concerns over revenue impact, the government believes the initiative will balance public convenience with sustainable toll collection, as commercial vehicles will continue to make up the majority of toll revenues. This move is poised to transform highway travel in India, offering a hassle-free and cost-effective solution for millions of private car owners.
