Governor Om Prakash Mathur Inaugurates New Multipurpose Hall in Pakyong and Highlights Sikkim’s Focus on Sanitation and Wellness
Gangtok: Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur concluded a successful one-day tour of Pakyong district, where he inaugurated a new Integrated Multipurpose Hall, constructed in collaboration with the Airport Authority of India. The hall’s opening was marked by the Alchem-Accessible Award Ceremony ‘Agaaz Plus,’ where the Governor served as the chief guest.
The ceremony highlighted the efforts of the Accessible Sanitation Club and the Alchem Foundation in improving sanitation standards in government schools across Sikkim. These organizations have focused on building changing rooms, improving access to clean drinking water, and enhancing sanitation facilities—all aimed at reducing student dropout rates. Governor Mathur lauded these initiatives, particularly emphasizing the importance of girls’ changing rooms in schools, which he linked to the broader Swachh Bharat Mission led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Governor Mathur also praised Sikkim’s leadership in environmental sustainability, mentioning programs like Plastic-Free Sikkim and ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati,’ which promote ecological conservation.
Later in the day, Mathur attended the 8th National Seminar on Yoga and Naturopathy in Rongli, organized by the Holistic and Research Center. Speaking at the event, he stressed the importance of yoga for maintaining physical and mental well-being, also highlighting the global reach of yoga, a movement championed by Prime Minister Modi. The Governor commended Dr. Arun Pradhan for his efforts in spreading yoga and naturopathy awareness in rural areas.
Mathur concluded his visit by identifying Sikkim as a prime location for wellness tourism. He suggested that establishing wellness centers in rural areas could support self-sufficiency while positioning Sikkim as a hub for health tourism, drawing on the state’s rich biodiversity and medicinal plant resources.
