Govt extends AFSPA in Assam for Six Months
Guwahati: The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) has been extended in Assam for another six months by the BJP-led state government.
The notification issued by the government stated that the Government of Assam in exercise of the powers that are conferred by the Section 3 of the Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 has declared the entire State of Assam as Disturbed Area up to six months with effect from 28-08-2021 unless withdrawn earlier.
It needs to be mentioned that despite there being a demand onto the removal of the AFSPA in the state, the government has not made any official statement as to why the Act was extended.
Various organisations in the state have termed the Act as “draconian” and over the years the has been a constant demand on the removal or withdrawal of the AFSPA.
