GP Singh: Strong action against the police officers involved in alleged custodial death

Guwahati: Assam’s special DGP (law and order) GP Singh on Sunday said that a special investigation team (SIT) will be formed to investigate the Batadrava mob violence on Saturday, May 21.

When addressing to the media Singh said, “We’ve decided to appoint a SIT to investigate the incident at the Batradava Police Station yesterday. I’ve also requested an independent investigation into Safikul Islam’s death.”

“We will take action in accordance with the law after the investigation report is submitted,” he added.

He also stated that the culprits will be identified from the images and recordings of the incident, and that arrests will be made as a result.

“We will also take tough measures against the cops involved in the alleged detention death. However, this does not imply that you set fire to a police station. “Arson is not permitted,” he stated.

The police further said that Islam died after his wife picked him up and drove him to the hospital, but his family claims that she discovered him dead there.

It should be mentioned that the situation in Batadrava became tense on Saturday after one person died in police custody.

The deceased identified as Safiqul Islam who was a resident of Salonabari in Dhing.

Locals have alleged that Safiqul was beaten to death in police custody after refusing to pay a bribe demanded by police station authorities.

The officials reportedly sought Rs 10,000, a duck, and a chicken from Safiqul’s family for his release.

Saifqul was arrested by the police when he was on his way to sell fish on Friday evening.

Later, an enraged mob set fire to the police station and assaulted two officers on duty.
