Grim Flood Situation in Assam’s Nagaon District; 84 Lives Lost Statewide

Guwahati, 11th July:The flood crisis continues to devastate Assam’s Nagaon district, impacting numerous lives amid ongoing rainfall and rising water levels. Across the state, the floods have claimed a total of 84 lives, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Local resident Rita Sahani and her family from Jakhalabandha have been enduring hardship for the past 10 days, forced to take shelter in a makeshift tent on an embankment after the Brahmaputra River submerged their home. Speaking to ANI, Sahani expressed the dire circumstances they face, unable to return home due to persistent floodwaters and ongoing rain.

“We have received some food items from the administration, but we cannot venture out for work. Our house is still inundated, and we are uncertain about our next steps,” Sahani lamented. She works as a daily wage laborer and emphasized the challenges posed by the flood, which have disrupted livelihoods across the region.

Similar stories echo throughout the area, with M Chouhan highlighting the loss of household items and the struggles of his 15-member family living in temporary shelters. Kalipad Das shared his uncertainty, unsure when they can safely return home amidst widespread flooding that has affected nearly 14.39 lakh people in Assam.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Nagaon district remains severely impacted, with approximately 79,000 people, including over 20,000 children, grappling with the aftermath. The flood has submerged 184 villages across six revenue circles and inundated 18,231.8 hectares of crop area in the district alone.

While efforts to mitigate the flood’s impact are ongoing, the situation remains challenging, with authorities and relief agencies continuing their relief efforts to support those affected by the disaster.

This year’s floods in Assam highlight the urgent need for sustained relief and rehabilitation efforts as communities strive to recover from the devastating impact of natural disasters.
