Group Captain Varun Singh cremated in Bhopal

Guwahati: The lone survivor of the Tamil Nadu chopper crash, Captain Varun Singh’s last rites were performed in Bhopal with full military honors on Friday morning.

The mortal remains of Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the Mi-17V5 helicopter crash near Tamil Nadu’s Coonor on December 8 reached the Bhopal airport from Bengaluru. He was undergoing treatment at the Willington’s Military Hospital and later shifted to Airforce Command Hospital in Bengaluru where he passed away on Wednesday. He was battling for life since December 8 and was on life support. He belonged to Bhopal and completed his graduation from National Defence Academy in 2003. Later he was commissioned as a fighter pilot in 2004. He was an experimental test [pilot and was also conferred with the Shaurya Chakra award this year in August 15. When he passed away, he was posted as an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College.

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the next of kin of Captain Singh. The Chief Minister of MP was also present during the cremation.
