GU-PGSU Criticized Police Atrocities On Protestors
Guwahati: The Gauhati University Post-Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) denounced police brutality toward students during the protest on Tuesday and claimed that ACP Bhargav Goswami had committed atrocities against them.
The GU students protested on Tuesday due to irregularities in the results for the fifth semester that the university released on July 29.
Police intervened during the rally and used brutality against the demonstrators.
The fifth semester results for GU were announced on July 29. The students claimed there were several irregularities in the results and therefore conducted a peaceful protest.
PGSU claimed that while they were trying to find a solution, the protest turned violent when police intervened and attempted to put an end to it by shoving them into a bus and transporting them to the police station.
The students’ union laid the blame for the whole thing on the GU administration, police, and government.
They threatened to hold another large-scale demonstration unless police provided an explanation for the atrocities, they committed yesterday during the rally on the GU campus.
They claimed that the inconsistencies of the fifth semester results were caused by Integrated University Management System (IUMS) irregularities. They further claimed that the situation occurred as a result of Delhi IT companies being granted online access to announce the findings.
They demanded that the web access granted to them be revoked within two to three days.
Numerous students from various colleges affiliated with GU gathered and demonstrated.
Police detained protesting students, including PGSU President Hemen Kalita of the university, during the intervention and brutality of the police.
Numerous students were injured in the incident, including the general secretary and president of the students’ organisation.
A girl student was also shifted to the hospital for treatment due to injuries.
The General Secretary of GU, Biki Sarma said, “The Jalukbari Police and the university administration tried to disperse a peaceful protest that was organised by over 500 students against the alleged abnormalities of the fifth semester results. We denounce the police’s barbaric treatment of the kids. We will demonstrate until our demands are met because we want justice.”
