GU Prof, Senior Journo Victims Amid Rising Cyber Crimes in Guwahati

Guwahati: With the increase in cybercrimes in Assam, two eminent citizens of the state have recently became prey to online fraud.

A Political Science Professor at Gauhati University named Akhil Ranjan Dutta was recently implicated in a cyberfraud case, reports stated on Sunday.

Reports claimed that cyber criminals stole Rs. 15,000 from Prof. Dutta’s bank account while pretending to be a members of the Indian Army.

It needs to be mentioned that when Prof. dutta scanned the QR code the thieves were able to loot the money.

In a separate incident, another prominent citizens was also the victim of the cybercrime.

Reportedly, Senior Journalist Manoram Gogoi had fallen victim to cybercrime, with thieves defrauding him of his money.

The cybercriminal initially claimed to be a worker at Narengi Army Public School. After failing, a woman got in touch with Gogoi under the guise of a restaurant order.

Additionally, the cybercriminals called him pretending to be an Army Accountant.

His Google Pay number was requested for an online transaction.

The scammers sent Gogoi two QR and they both swapped one rupee each using Google Pay.

In between this Rs. 10,000 was withdrawn from Gogoi’s bank account which is when he realized what had happened.

Gogoi was taken aback by the incident because despite his vigilance, the cybercriminals were still able to loot such a large amount of money.

He urged Assam Police to take proper action against these cybercriminals in order to prevent the savings of innocent people from being looted in this way
