Gujarat: 1 dead & several injured after Stampede at Surat railway station

National Desk, 11th November: In a devastating turn of events, a fatal stampede unfolded at Surat railway station in Gujarat on Saturday, claiming the life of one person and leaving several others injured. The incident transpired amidst a massive congregation of individuals embarking on journeys to their hometowns for Diwali celebrations. As passengers attempted to board the train, chaos ensued, resulting in one casualty and numerous individuals fainting or sustaining injuries.

Swift medical assistance was promptly administered to those harmed in the stampede. Notably, Darshana Jardosh, Surat’s MP and state railways minister, paid a visit to the hospital to personally meet and offer support to the injured victims.

Sumit Thakor, Chief Public Relations Officer, stated, “In light of the festive season, Western Railways have operated 46 pairs of special trains, totaling approximately 400 trips, connecting Mumbai, Gujarat, and segments of Madhya Pradesh. A staggering 7 lakh passengers are utilizing these services to reach their destinations.”

Acknowledging the festive rush, Thakor emphasized the implementation of special measures for crowd management. Surat station saw the deployment of nearly 165 Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel, along with the opening of additional counters to accommodate the surge in travelers.
