Gujarat: 4 Bihar labourers die of suffocation inside tank in Surat
National Desk, 15th November: In a devastating incident, four migrant labourers from Bihar lost their lives due to suffocation while working inside a septic tank at a dyeing factory on Palsana-Katodara road in Surat.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, with preliminary investigations suggesting that two workers fell unconscious during the septic tank cleaning process, prompting two others to attempt a rescue.
The process of identifying the deceased individuals, who hail from Bihar, is currently underway.
H. L. Rathore, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Bardoli Division, mentioned that senior officials of the factory are being questioned in connection with the tragic incident.
“Four workers had gone to clean the (septic) tank and died due to suffocation. Further investigation is underway. We are questioning seniors of the factory…All the four deceased are the residents of Bihar,” said DSP Rathore.
Police responded to the scene on Wednesday morning after receiving a call at 6:30 am. Upon arrival, they found the workers unconscious.
Despite prompt extraction efforts, the labourers were rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced them brought dead. The deceased workers were residing in a colony of the factory.
This incident highlights the risks associated with hazardous tasks such as septic tank cleaning, underscoring the need for stringent safety measures in such workplaces.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this tragic loss of lives.
