Guwahati city will take time to get flood free: Ashok Singhal
Guwahati: Newly appointed Chairman of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) Ashok Singhal on Thursday reviewed the prevalent situations across the Guwahati city and damages caused due to incessant rainfall.
During the meeting, Singhal said that clogged drains have caused a major hindrance in Government continuous efforts to reduce the artificial flood in the city.
Reportedly Ashok Singhal have visited several areas of Guwahati that are suffering due to heavy flood like Bharalumukh and Chabipul area of the city.
Singhal informed that the water is flowing out without much difficulty because the work is progressing smoothly. However, the water is moving slowly due to the constant rain.
The Bharalu River’s water capacity has been reduced as a result of a considerable amount of waste being thrown into the river.
Singhal said that the super-sucker machines which are used to raise water from several locations around Guwahati are slow to operate.
GMC was unable to complete it to the highest standard due to a lack of positive attitude on the part of the team.
He further informed that they are currently implementing innovative concepts to avoid artificial prohibitions.
Meanwhile, two pit dugs have been set up at the Chandmari Railway crossing to drain the water.
Singhal also stated that GMC has also been unable to put the super-sucker devices to good use.
He further informed that another pipe will be built to discharge the water that flows down from Meghalaya into Silsako Lake and there will be many sewage discharges in the drain and it will take around 2 to 3 years more to complete.
He further added, “In this grim situation, while we are tirelessly working to unclog the drains at several locations, I ardently appeal Guwahati residents not to dump waste into drains.”
