Guwahati Fortifies Ahead of Independence Day with Sweeping Security Drills

Guwahati: As India gears up to celebrate its 78th Independence Day, Guwahati Police have significantly beefed up security across the city, launching a series of late-night search operations to thwart any untoward incidents.

Thursday night saw police personnel descend upon various parts of the city in a surprise crackdown. Extensive vehicle checks and thorough area inspections were conducted, notably in the high-security precinct outside the Assam Secretariat. These operations, carried out under stringent security protocols, were primarily focused on intercepting the transport of any suspicious or prohibited articles.

The enhanced vigilance, according to sources, is a direct response to recent arrests of suspected conduits linked to the banned militant outfit, United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I), across Assam. These arrests have heightened apprehensions regarding potential threats as the August 15 celebrations draw near.

Consequently, Guwahati Police have ramped up surveillance and amplified night patrolling, particularly concentrating on sensitive areas and zones witnessing high public footfall. Officials have confirmed that these intensified operations will persist over the coming days, with random checks planned across diverse parts of the city.

The police have also appealed to citizens to lend their full cooperation to the security forces and promptly report any unusual or suspicious activities to their nearest police station.

“These measures are routine precautionary steps aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful Independence Day celebration,” a senior police official commented. “Public support and vigilance are absolutely crucial for the success of these efforts.”
