Guwahati gears up to host 4-day Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya temple, after 2 Years

Guwahati: Much to the joy of devotees, the Ambubachi Mela will be conducted at the Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati of Assam after a two-year hiatus.

The decision to organise the yearly celebration was made at a meeting in Guwahati on Thursday between the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and the Kamakhya Temple Trust Board.

Every year, lakhs of devotees from throughout the country and other countries flock to the annual Ambubachi Mela which is one of the country’s major religious gatherings.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc around the world during the last two years it had to be put on hold.

The Ambubachi Mela commemorates Goddess Kamakhya’s yearly menstruation and honours Mother Earth’s fertility and ability to nurture life.

However, the district administration requested that the temple trust board limit the number of worshippers attending the ceremony.

Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner, Pallav Gopal Jha said, “I appeal to the Kamakhya Temple Trust Board to keep the number of devotees attending the Ambubachi Mela limited.”

Senior Assam police officers were also present at the meeting, which addressed security measures for the approaching event.
