Guwahati Grapples with Flash Floods Following Heavy Downpour
Guwahati: Guwahati awoke to a deluge this morning, as relentless heavy rainfall pounded the city for two to three hours, triggering widespread waterlogging and bringing vehicular movement to a near standstill across key thoroughfares.
The downpour transformed major arteries into virtual waterways, with knee-deep water reported across a significant portion of the city. Residents and commuters faced immense difficulties navigating submerged roads, including Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, and several residential areas such as Nabin Nagar and Anil Nagar. The impact extended to commercial hubs like Guwahati Club and Lachit Nagar, as well as areas in Chandmari, Panjabari, Jorabat, Tarun Nagar, and Survey.
The inclement weather also resulted in power disruptions in certain pockets of the city, adding to the woes of the affected populace. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati had earlier issued a weather bulletin forecasting thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph in isolated parts of Assam.
The persistent issue of urban flooding in Guwahati is not new. In August of the previous year, the Gauhati High Court emphasized the urgent need for a permanent solution to the city’s flooding woes, underscoring the responsibility of the government to implement effective measures. Today’s events serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that continue to plague the city during periods of heavy rainfall.
