Guwahati: GRP Thwarts Illicit Cigarette Smuggling, Netting Rs. 4 Lakh Haul

Guwahati, 9th November: In a commendable operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) achieved a significant breakthrough by confiscating 800 packets of illicit foreign cigarettes, amounting to Rs. 4 lakhs, at Guwahati Railway Station. The apprehension of an individual, Manikandan R., accompanied the successful interception of the contraband.

Sources reveal that the illegal cigarettes were smuggled in from Dimapur, Nagaland, triggering an ongoing investigation. Manikandan, now in custody, will undergo legal proceedings for his involvement in this illicit trade.

The GRP, acting on intelligence inputs, orchestrated the operation, underscoring their commitment to curbing unlawful activities. This incident follows a similar operation in August, where the Customs Department seized a substantial quantity of illegal foreign cigarettes valued at Rs 53.60 lakhs in the Boragaon area of Guwahati.
