Guwahati Hit by Heavy Rainfall and Gusty Winds Following Cyclone Remal’s Landfall

Guwahati, 28th May: Guwahati experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds on May 28 as Cyclone Remal made landfall in Northeast India. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures across Assam remained below 30 degrees Celsius, with the exception of Silchar, which recorded a temperature of 31.2 degrees Celsius.

This weather change comes as a relief for Assam, which had been facing soaring temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds for the districts of Karimganj, Cachar, Dima Hasao, and Goalpara.

Additionally, Dhubri, Barpeta, South Salmara Mancachar, and Hailakandi districts are expected to receive very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Other districts in the state are predicted to experience light showers and thunderstorms.

Cyclone Remal has also caused significant destruction in West Bengal, killing four people and damaging nearly 29,500 houses. The cyclone, which made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on the night of May 26, has displaced 207,060 people, with 77,288 still residing in rescue camps.
