Guwahati Markets Abuzz with Diwali Preparations as Residents Embrace Traditions
Guwahati: With Diwali on the horizon, Guwahati’s markets are alive with activity as residents eagerly shop for essential items like earthen pots and oil lamps, crucial for the upcoming festivities and Kali Puja.
Traders have displayed a wide array of diyas, sourced from various regions of Assam, including Goalpara, Nagarbera, and Sonapur.
Local trader Dilip Das reported a noticeable rise in prices this year but remains optimistic about sales as the festival approaches. “We are hoping that sales will be high in the coming days,” he said, reflecting the positive sentiment among sellers.
Customers are also highlighting the cultural significance of lighting diyas during Diwali. Nabarun Dutta emphasized that while decorative items abound, the tradition of lighting diyas holds a special place in the hearts of the community and supports local artisans. “It’s our tradition, and it supports local potters,” Dutta stated.
In related festive news, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared updates from the Lakshmi Puja celebrations at Bijni Lakshmi Mandir, where he inaugurated the redeveloped temple complex.
He underscored the importance of the accompanying Mela, which not only attracts large crowds but also showcases Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister launched Mission Basundhara 3.0 in Guwahati, a significant initiative aimed at granting land rights to indigenous residents.
He also introduced the Chief Minister’s Atamnirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA), designed to support local entrepreneurs, with plans to extend financial assistance to 75,000 beneficiaries in its next phase.
As Guwahati gears up for Diwali, the combination of vibrant market activity and governmental initiatives reflects the community’s commitment to preserving traditions while fostering local economic growth.
