Guwahati: Minor Rescued After Jumping into Drain Over Denied Money Demand

Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — A 16-year-old boy was rescued after jumping into a drain in the Hatigaon area of Guwahati early this morning. The incident occurred around 5:30 am when the boy, upset after being denied Rs 1,000 by his mother, leapt into the drain. He was found approximately five hours later at 10:39 am.

According to local reports, the boy had a history of similar behavior, using such drastic measures to solicit money. His father revealed that the boy had earlier taken his sister’s phone and called their mother asking for Rs 1,000. When the father went to retrieve him, the boy jumped into the drain upon seeing him.

The Hatigaon Police Officer in-Charge reported that the boy had informed his mother, via a phone call, that he was in Sijubari having tea and requested her not to search for him. Despite the misleading information, local residents managed to locate and retrieve him from another drain located over 50 meters away from the original site.

The boy has been taken into custody at the Hatigaon Police Station. The authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
