Guwahati, 17th November: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India concluded its two-day camp sitting in Guwahati on November 17, addressing pending cases of human rights violations in eight Northeastern States. Presided over by Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra, the camp aimed to create awareness among officials of State Governments, parastatal organizations, and NGOs.

In his inaugural speech on November 16, 2023, Justice Arun Mishra emphasized the NHRC’s broad mandate for promoting and protecting human rights. He highlighted that the camp sitting in the Northeastern States was a unique initiative to reach victims of human rights violations directly.

During the session, the NHRC heard approximately 55 cases involving issues such as land disputes, violence, infrastructure deficiencies, and negligence. Cases included the alleged division of Chakma lands, rape incidents, casualties due to negligence in railway projects, and poor conditions in district hospitals.

The NHRC also conducted meetings with Chief Secretaries and DGPs of the Northeastern States, urging them to submit action taken reports on various advisories issued by the Commission. The officials were directed to ensure timely submissions and fill vacant posts for the smooth functioning of State Human Rights Commissions.

In an interaction with NGOs and Human Rights Defenders, the NHRC appreciated their efforts and encouraged continued collaboration. The Commission emphasized that this partnership would strengthen the human rights regime in the country. NGOs and HRDs were informed that they can file complaints of human rights violations through hrcnet.me.in.
