Guwahati Police Crack Theft Case at Litterateur Hiren Gohain’s Residence, Four Arrested
Guwahati: In a major breakthrough, Guwahati Police have arrested four individuals involved in a recent theft at the residence of renowned scholar and Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr. Hiren Gohain. The incident, which occurred in Nizarapar under Chandmari Police Station, had sparked public concern due to Dr. Gohain’s stature as one of Assam’s most respected intellectuals.
The case, registered as Chandmari PS Case No. 151/2025, was cracked after police teams acted swiftly on the basis of CCTV footage and technical intelligence. The arrests were made from multiple locations, including Noukhuti in Lanka, near the railway station in Dimapur, Gandhibasti in Guwahati, and Bagulamari in Bilasipara, Dhubri. All four suspects are believed to be part of a coordinated gang that allegedly trespassed into Dr. Gohain’s home and made away with cash.
Investigators have recovered a portion of the stolen money, and further interrogation is underway to determine whether the gang was involved in other thefts across the region.
Dr. Hiren Gohain, born in Golaghat in 1939, has had a distinguished academic and literary career. With degrees from Calcutta University, Delhi University, and a PhD from Cambridge, he taught at Dibrugarh University and later retired as a professor of English at Gauhati University. He is best known for his critical analysis of Srimanta Sankardev’s works, for which he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award.
Throughout his career, Gohain has remained an outspoken and independent voice in Assam’s socio-political discourse. A vocal critic during the Assam Movement, he later acknowledged the legitimacy of the Assamese people’s concerns. His fearless commentary continues to influence public thought in the state.
The police have assured that they will pursue all leads and expand the investigation if connections to other crimes emerge.
