Guwahati Police Secure Landmark Convictions in POCSO Cases

Guwahati – In a significant boost to child protection efforts, the Guwahati City Police have successfully secured convictions in two critical cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Both cases, originating from the Paltan Bazar Police Station, highlight the department’s unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for young victims.

In the first case, bearing FIR No. 105/24, the court delivered a stringent verdict, sentencing Chandan Bora to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the sexual assault of a minor. A fine of ₹10,000 was also imposed. The remarkably swift investigation by officers from Paltan Bazar Police Station, coupled with the robust presentation of evidence, led to this conviction being secured within a year of the incident, underscoring the efficiency of the legal process.

Meanwhile, a more harrowing case, FIR No. 519/23, saw Jayanta Talukdar handed a life sentence for the repeated sexual abuse of his 14-year-old relative. The breakthrough in this deeply disturbing case came when the courageous survivor confided in her school teacher, who then promptly informed the family. This led to the lodging of an FIR at Paltan Bazar Police Station and Talukdar’s subsequent arrest. The court, after meticulously evaluating all evidence and testimonies, imposed a life sentence along with a substantial fine of ₹1 lakh. Special praise was reserved for Woman Sub-Inspector Jitumoni Rabha, the investigating officer, whose sensitive and thorough handling of the case was pivotal in achieving this crucial conviction.

The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has lauded the dedicated officers involved in both cases, affirming that these outcomes unequivocally demonstrate the department’s resolute commitment to providing justice for child abuse survivors. The Commissionerate further emphasised that such successful legal interventions underscore the vital role of timely action and compassionate policing in safeguarding the future of children.
