Guwahati Restricts Processions to Ease Traffic Congestion

Guwahati: The Guwahati Police Commissionerate has implemented a new order restricting all forms of processions within city limits to maintain an uninterrupted commute for the public. Effective from June 6, 2025, the directive aims to alleviate traffic congestion and associated issues.

The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Imdad Ali, draws authority from Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The decision to restrict processions, rallies, runs, marathons, and walkathons was made to address significant traffic congestion and potential risks to public safety.

The city administration has received numerous complaints about disruptions caused by large processions, and this measure is intended to optimise road usage efficiently. Any violation of the order is punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Citizens affected by the order can submit a written objection to the Deputy Commissioner of Police for consideration, allowing for flexibility while safeguarding public interests. This move is part of a broader effort to prioritise public safety, maintain order, and enhance the quality of life for Guwahati’s residents.

The directive reflects the city administration’s commitment to balancing civic freedom with the necessity of maintaining public order and safety. By restricting processions, the authorities aim to ensure that public and emergency services can operate without hindrance, ultimately benefiting the city’s residents and commuters.
