Guwahati: Senior Assistant at Sub-Registrar’s Office Apprehended in Land Fraud Scandal
Guwahati, 23rd November: The Crime Branch in Guwahati has apprehended Nitul Das, a senior assistant at the Sub-Registrar’s office in the office of the District Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro). The arrest followed a raid at his Kharghuli residence as part of an ongoing investigation into a fraudulent land registration scandal that has sent shockwaves through the administrative circles in Guwahati.
During the raid, conducted by the Crime Branch, various incriminating documents were unearthed at Nitul Das’s residence, including approximately ₹2.5 lakh in cash, land-related documents, fake seals, a TI book, and a volume registration book.
The arrest is part of an investigation into an intricate web of fraud, where Nitul Das allegedly exploited online platforms to deceive victims, manipulating land records and registrations for personal gains. The seized documents and evidence suggest his involvement in registering land in the name of individuals who were not the actual owners.
This arrest is not isolated, as earlier, a DTP operator at the DC office, identified as Dhrubajyoti Barman, was apprehended in connection with the same case. The arrest of advocate Mainul Hoque preceded these arrests, indicating a network of individuals involved in fraudulent activities.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the situation, stating, “A huge racket involving the production of counterfeit land documents has been uncovered by the GuwahatiPol today. The search is currently ongoing.”
