Guwahati, the most polluted city in NE
Guwahati: Guwahati has the most polluted air quality across Northeast India, a report by New Delhi-based think tank centre stated.
Guwahati has almost 2 months of very air quality days making it the most polity city in the northeast. This year so far, the number of days with air quality in the very poor or severe categories stands at 54 days in Guwahati. This is comparable to cities of North India which are more polluted compared to those in the North Eastern states that think tank stated.
The problem of air pollution is growing steadily in the Northeast the analysis by the New Delhi based think tank Centre for science and environment has revealed, negating the impression of pristine blue skies and clean air that people usually have about the region
In other cities of the Northeast good and satisfactory days dominate but poor and very poor days have also begun to emerge. Agartala registered 10 very poor days while Kohima had two.
There are a considerable number of days in these cities for which the air quality index could not be calculated due to poor data availability. The air quality index chart for Shillong, Aizawl, and Naharlagun could not be made as these cities do not have enough data.
CSE investigated the state of urban air quality in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. This is part of CSE’s Urban Data Analytics Lab’s air quality tracker effort, which began last winter.
The goal of this new study is to determine the volume and pattern of winter pollution in key cities in the region that have recently begun to monitor air quality in real time.
For the period of January 1, 2019 through December 7, 2021, this is an analysis of annual and seasonal patterns in PM2.5 concentrations.
