Guwahati: Traffic Advisory Issued Amidst NH-27 Construction

Guwahati: Guwahati is currently grappling with significant traffic disruptions along the crucial Khanapara–Jorabat section of National Highway 27. This development follows the implementation of a comprehensive traffic advisory issued by authorities as the National Highways Authority of India intensifies pavement quality concrete panel work. The accelerated construction schedule is a proactive measure to ensure the highway’s resilience before the anticipated heavy monsoon rains.

The ongoing construction, while essential for long-term road maintenance, has created substantial bottlenecks for vehicles traveling into Guwahati from the regions of Upper Assam and neighboring Meghalaya. Recognizing the growing inconvenience faced by commuters and the need for timely project completion, the district administration has sanctioned a series of strategic diversions and specific movement restrictions tailored for different types of vehicles.

A significant aspect of the new traffic management plan involves the complete diversion of all goods-carrying vehicles destined for Guwahati from Upper Assam. These vehicles will now be rerouted at Kaliabor Tiniali, taking an alternative path through Sonitpur, Darrang, and Baihata Chariali. This measure is specifically designed to alleviate the intense pressure currently experienced at the Jorabat junction.

Furthermore, a time-bound entry system has been established for goods vehicles originating from Nagaon, Morigaon, and Meghalaya. These vehicles will only be allowed to enter Guwahati city limits via NH-27 during a specific eight-hour window, between 10 PM and 6 AM. This restriction aims to manage the flow of heavy vehicles during peak daytime hours.

To further ease congestion, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) traveling from Upper Assam are strongly advised to avoid the heavily impacted Khanapara–Jorabat corridor altogether. Several alternative routes have been suggested for these vehicles, including pathways via Digaru Point – Digaru Tiniali – Amsing Jorabat – Army Camp – Patharquarry; Digaru Point – Digaru Tiniali – Chandrapur – Panikhaiti – Narengi; Chamota – Mayong – Chandrapur – Panikhaiti – Narengi; and Jagiroad – Mayong – Chandrapur – Panikhaiti – Narengi.

This detailed traffic advisory, officially approved by the relevant authorities, is a direct response to the escalating travel delays and commuter inconvenience caused by the necessary construction work. The primary objectives are to mitigate these disruptions and facilitate the smooth and timely completion of the critical repairs being undertaken by NHAI.

In light of these changes, the authorities are making a strong appeal to the general public for their full cooperation. Commuters are urged to strictly adhere to the new traffic regulations and follow the directions provided by traffic personnel on the ground. This collective effort is deemed crucial to ensure a smoother and safer flow of traffic throughout the affected region during this period of construction.
