Guwahati: Transgender Advocate Swati Bidhan Baruah Granted Bail After Month in Jail

Guwahati, 30th March: After spending a month in jail, transgender advocate Swati Bidhan Baruah was granted bail by a court on Friday. Baruah had been arrested on March 1 in connection with the suicide of her partner, Mansur Alam, in Guwahati’s Pandu area.

The district magistrate’s court granted her bail due to the investigating police officer’s failure to produce the case diary despite repeated directions from the court. Bail was set at Rs 30,000 along with a surety.

Mansur Alam, Baruah’s partner, allegedly took his own life after enduring mental harassment inflicted by Baruah. The relationship between Mansur and Baruah was tumultuous, with Mansur reportedly facing mental anguish over an extended period.

Baruah had filed a complaint with the local police accusing Mansur of rape, but later, she herself was accused of rape against Mansur.

Mansur’s family alleged that he had been employed at Baruah’s residence for the past one-and-a-half years and that Baruah had developed an illicit relationship with him.
