Guwahati’s Heritage Trees Face Axe for Flyover Project, Sparking Outrage
Guwahati: The proposed removal of historic trees around Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati has ignited a firestorm of protests from Assamese cultural icons, residents, and nature enthusiasts.
Singer Papon Angaraag and filmmaker Rima Das have voiced their concerns, highlighting the importance of balancing development with preservation.
Papon expressed frustration on social media, stating that the destruction of century-old trees for modernization projects risks erasing Guwahati’s historical charm and ecological identity. He urged for a more thoughtful approach, prioritizing preservation alongside development.
Rima Das echoed Papon’s sentiments, mourning the loss of irreplaceable heritage and appealing for a deeper understanding of the emotional and cultural impact.
The controversy surrounds the construction of a six-mile-long flyover, which has sparked widespread discontent among locals. Authorities marked 25 trees for felling, including 200-year-old specimens, without conducting an environmental impact study or public hearing.
Prominent citizens have opposed the tree-cutting proposal, citing concerns over biodiversity, heritage, and environmental damage. A protest was called on October 29, 2024.
