Hazlewood Boost for RCB Ahead of Playoff Push

Bengaluru: In a significant shot in the arm for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs, Australian pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood has rejoined the squad. This timely return comes just two days before their crucial final league encounter against Lucknow Super Giants on May 27.

Hazlewood had previously flown back home during the IPL’s temporary suspension amidst the India-Pakistan military conflict, also nursing a persistent shoulder niggle. The right-arm pacer has now fully recovered, much to the relief of the RCB management and fans.

“It’s obviously great to be back. A couple of weeks at home, (I) made the most of the last (as I) went up to Brisbane and bowled quite a few overs,” Hazlewood remarked in a video shared by RCB on Sunday. “Everything has been good. Hopefully to get the ball rolling again and, yeah, look forward to tomorrow and start the practice.”

The 34-year-old was undergoing training in Brisbane, integral to Australia’s preparations for the upcoming World Test Championship final against South Africa next month, with his progress closely monitored by Cricket Australia’s medical team.

The RCB camp has been keenly following Hazlewood’s rehabilitation. His impact this IPL season has been undeniable, with 18 wickets from just 10 matches, making him RCB’s standout bowler and currently placing him fourth in the overall wicket-takers’ list.

Having already secured their playoff berth, RCB now face Lucknow Super Giants in their last league fixture.

While qualified, RCB’s quest for a coveted top-two finish hinges on other results after their recent 42-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. A narrow victory for Punjab Kings over Mumbai Indians on Monday would keep RCB’s hopes alive for a direct entry into Qualifier 1. However, a loss against LSG would see the Rajat Patidar-led side once again navigate the Eliminator route, adding an extra layer of pressure to their playoff journey.
