Health Experts Warns India About Tomato Flu, Says Virus ‘Very Contagious’

Guwahati: Doctors are warning the public about a new illness called “tomato flu” that is sweeping India.

Kerala and Odisha have reported cases of tomato flu, a unique type of HFM illness.

Health professionals state that there are now no specific medications available to treat the virus and that it is “extremely contagious.”

According to reports by the Lancet Respiratory Journal, as many as 82 children had been affected with the “tomato flu,” which was originally identified in Kerala’s Kollam on May 6. These children are under the age of 5.

Adults rarely develop the infectious condition because they have robust immune systems that can defend them from the virus. Intestinal viruses are the cause of the illness.

Red, painful blisters that initially appear on a patient’s body and eventually grow and resemble tomatoes give the infection its name.

The signs include a high fever, body aches, joint swelling, and exhaustion, just like chikungunya.

In addition, some patients have reported experiencing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, dehydration, swollen joints, and body aches.

Three further Keralan regions are reportedly affected: Anchal, Aryankavu, and Neduvathur.

A warning was issued in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as a result of the infection’s appearance.
