Heavy Monsoon Rains Forecast for Guwahati, Officials Urge Vigilance

Guwahati: Guwahati is bracing for a fresh bout of heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a severe weather alert for the city. The forecast, valid for the next 24 hours, predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, raising concerns about urban flooding and disruptions to daily life.

As per the IMD bulletin, an intense spell of rain, with a precipitation rate of 2-3 cm per hour, is expected to lash most parts of the city. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has responded proactively, issuing a public advisory urging residents to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant.

The weather warning has put commuters on high alert. With the possibility of waterlogging in vulnerable areas and localised flooding, vehicular movement is likely to be slow and difficult. Both daily office-goers and long-distance travellers have been asked to carefully plan their journeys and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense downpour.

ASDMA officials have specifically cautioned residents living in low-lying and hillside areas to be on the lookout for signs of flooding or landslides. The authority has stressed the importance of staying updated with official weather bulletins and adhering to safety advisories issued by local authorities. Emergency response systems have been activated across the city to closely monitor the unfolding situation. The public has been advised to remain indoors as much as possible and steer clear of waterlogged zones.
